Fabindia Guest House
Pāli, India

This structure, a guesthouse for an establishment linking rural artisans to urban markets, is entirely built of stone, much of it quarried locally. In fact, this decision becomes a main design determinant, as the spatial construct follows the qualities and dimensions of the stone. Laid-out in the typology characteristic of the arid landscape, six rooms give onto an octagonal courtyard. Load-bearing masonry walls are built in-situ with lime mortar on a stone plinth. Columns cut from solid stone are then erected, stone beams tie into the walls, and 11 pre-cut roof slabs top the one-storey structure. Truth to materials as well as to the challenge of creativity with a singular stone palette flavour the design solutions.
