Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University
Lonere, India

Comprising classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls, library, canteen, computer centre, senate rooms, offices and Vice-Chancellor’s block, this extensive complex is designed with sensitivity to its picturesque rural environment. Trapezium-shaped roof sections reflect the forms of the surrounding hills, while domed elements recall the nearby historic fortress of Raigad. Local materials, including terracotta-coloured laterite stone, are used. Monument-like, the buildings are intended to instil a sense of belonging and pride in students, 40% of whom are locals. The architecture is characterised by varying spatial volumes, free-flowing air and the play of light and shadow. A series of courtyards provides a continuous dialogue with nature. The 12 staircase blocks encourage social interaction.
