Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Asian Architectural and Urban Heritage
Malacca, Malaysia
Housed in two restored terraced townhouses, this combined training facility and resource centre offers study opportunities, symposiums, workshops and exhibitions relating to architecture, urban heritage and conservation. Materials and techniques used in the restoration match the originals, retaining their passive climate responsiveness. Hidden features including arched openings and painted signage were uncovered and have been left exposed. The ground floors of both units have been made open plan for maximum flexibility. New additions are sensitively inserted to provide a subtle contrast between the old and the recent, and are designed with double purposes where possible, such as the feature spiral stairs which also provide an access platform for the installation of temporary projection screens.
