State Department Complex
Nusajaya, Malaysia
Designed to house government offices for a staff of 1,000 in a new administrative centre, these two symmetrical, curvilinear structures facing one another across an oval courtyard draw inspiration from traditional Malay residential architecture in the vocabulary and the profile of their roofs, as well as in the use of the open porch, open verandah and the shady rooftop terraces. Each building consists of a five-storey central core, with steep, 45-degree pitched timber roofs cascading down to three and two storey structures. The reinforced concrete frame in-filled with burnt clay bricks employs a steel structure for the roof and louvered sun-shades over extensive skylights for natural light.
