Ecovillage Project
Busabala, Uganda
This model house, symbolising in its circularity the cosmology of the people living by Lake Victoria consisting of two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, toilet, and extra room was entirely built by locals without the use of contract machinery. In fact, it employed low-tech, earth-bag construction technology in which local soil is infused with a 5% cement solution, placed in bags, and stacked to create a domed structure. This self-built, earthquake-resistant model house applied what is referred to as ‘Haga Sophia’ technology in which the central dome is supported by two small half-domes and three vaulted passageways in order to achieve a noteworthy eight-metre height.
