Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions of Djerba
Houmt Souk, Tunisia
The Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions is currently housed in a historic Zaouia, an old Islamic school. The exhibits are distributed through a number of traditional, whitewashed, buildings in a series of indoor and outdoor spaces including: patios, domed structures, and a cistern. Pots, weavings, costumes and other cultural artifacts are presented throughout compound, with the architecture serving as a backdrop to the art. Given its location, the compound is threatened by the possibility of floods and is battling moisture problems associated with a high water table. In view of these factors a study has been undertaken that identifies the need to construct a new museum for the collection.
