Contertainer Building
Batu, Indonesia
Founded in 2001, the small town of Batu had little in the way of public facilities. This project provides a free library and dental care for those on low incomes, and the aim was to create a positive and empowering focal point. To this end, the scheme has taken nine salvaged containers, arranging them on reinforced concrete supports and colouring them brightly to create a dynamic sculptural composition. Internally, they are made comfortable with linings for walls, floors and ceilings, and windows have been cut out to bring in natural light. The result is intended to act as a model for building with low-cost, unconventional, salvaged materials.
