Koh Mook Island Community Building
Trang, Thailand
This project has seen an island fishing community build 138 new houses and restore 100 more. The community worked closely with the development agency and architect to both design and build the housing, establishing a paradigm for a participatory process that can be applied in other areas struck by disaster. This ‘bottom-up’ approach not only empowers the community but also ensures a programme that addresses the requirements unique to each place. A small mosque, pontoon, assembly hall and refuse area were also provided as part of an incremental scheme in three phases so that additions can be made as funding becomes available.
