Post-Tsunami Eco-Village
Kalutara, Sri Lanka
This village comprises 55 dwellings and a community centre for families from three displaced coastal villages. The masterplan follows the topography, avoiding grid patterns and using levels to express individuality and privacy while houses are grouped to create a sense of place. Eco brick walls and steep roofs on timber structures echo traditional design and contribute to an environmental strategy that also includes rainwater harvesting, solar energy use and waste water management. The community centre forms the natural heart of the settlement creating a low cost, socially responsive village that acts as a pilot project for similar schemes.
