Tariq Fahmi Villa
Alexandria, Egypt
This house aims to set a paradigm for combining local identity with modern convenience through a symbiosis of modernity and tradition, regionalism and globalism, mass and light. At its heart is the traditional court - a space for socialising, circulation and climatic control - no longer closed to the outside, but instead opening up to bring interior and exterior together in a continuum. Pyramids of wood and glass provide diffuse top lighting. The materials are modern, cement and reinforced concrete, but the thick load-bearing walls are traditional in structure and provide insulation, while natural ventilation further reduces energy consumption.
