Aljir Memorial and Museum Complex
Astana, Kazakhstan
This memorial complex dedicated to victims of political repression is built on the site where the notorious 'Camp for wives of traitors of the Motherland' stood. It is also near the airport, so aircraft passengers can see the memorial covered with materials of red shades, and its central cross-shaped plan. The main symbolic elements include an 'Arch of Sorrow' at one end of the cross, with light-reflecting metal disks. At the other end is the museum, a truncated cone designed to create a sense of imprisonment. A trench called the ‘Wall of Memory’, links the two and leads to two sculptures symbolising ‘Despair and Debility’ and ‘Struggle and Hope’.
