Rehabilitation of an Old Quarter
Muharraq, Bahrain
This project comprises the ongoing reconstruction and reuse of historic houses in the oldest quarter of Muharraq, using the original owners’ occupations as inspiration to revive traditional craft and promote local culture. It is an intervention on a human and urban scale in that each building is a ‘living museum’ reviving local identity and together they reinvigorate the urban fabric, attracting back the local population. Restoration is complemented by the strategic use of modern materials although all finishes are traditional, reviving local construction techniques.
