TCS House
Mumbai, India
Located in a historic district of Mumbai, the adaptive reuse of this building posed complex challenges. The corner site is bounded by roads that remained open throughout. Propping the three stone facades was complicated by their fragility, so props could only be anchored at window openings. The original structure had deteriorated so badly that a new RCC frame had to be built around it and the original painstakingly removed by hand. An operational sub-station on site and heavy monsoon rains provided additional difficulties. Sympathetic massing and materials have been employed to create a unified architecture that provides for the future without compromising the spirit of the past.
