Well Hall
Xian, China
Well Hall is an experimental building, inspired not by local architecture but by local craftsmen. Located at a rural winery, it takes inspiration from the country house style - particularly in the materials and use of courtyards - but transforms the traditional layout, brickwork, fenestration and even wall height, which here become vastly exaggerated. The construction relied on sketches and demonstrations rather than measured drawings. As such, the project involved intense communication between architect and labourers, who were not expecting the building's contemporary form.
