Antoine Touma House
Damascus, Syria
This suburban house attempts to set an example for integrating tradition and modernity. It takes as its model a Damascene courtyard house, but, following the convention for hillside houses, the fourth side is opened to the landscape, with an arcade offering views. Careful research identified appropriate features, such as the sheltering iwans on each side of the court. Emphasis was placed on reviving dying crafts, with plastic and its by-products banned in favour of local wood and stone, including pink granite salvaged from derelict buildings. Double external walls make air conditioning redundant and provide space for traditional features such as niches and shutters.
