Jawahar Lal Nehru Junior College
Lakshadweep, India
The piecemeal nature of the site, an amalgamation of many small plots, determined the organisation of this residential junior college, the first of its type in the Lakshadweep Islands. All necessary facilities, including classrooms, labs, library, gym, student accommodation and administration, are housed in separate buildings dispersed across the landscape - an approach which also largely preserved existing planting. To further reduce the impact of the construction on the island's fragile ecology, all materials were shipped from the mainland. The structure is of reinforced concrete, with brick infill walls.
