Senai Cargo Building
Johor Baharu, Malaysia
The commission was for a 'temporary' air cargo building that could potentially be relocated and refitted for passenger use (an idea now unlikely to be realised). The resulting structure is both climate-responsive and demountable. Pin-joint connections and short structural members ensure that the lightweight steel frame is transportable (like 'a modern equivalent of a temporary thatched hut'). Natural ventilation is combined with controlled airflow across the building. The roof is partially double-layered, with a bottom layer of inclined, demountable glass panels and a top layer of metal decking coated with a membrane that blocks intense solar radiation.
