Civilization Studies Center
Cairo, Egypt
The project is the rehabilitation of a late 19th century building, located in Fatimid Cairo, for multi-purpose use including facilities for the Centre for Egyptian Civilisation Studies, the Association of the Urban Development of Islamic Cairo, and Lagnet al-Zakah.

The building is situated 100 meters south of the mosque-madrassa and mausoleum of al-Ghuria. A rectangular structure, it is built around an inner courtyard of dressed stone and dates from the end of the 19th century. Rehabilitation has concentrated on the southwest wing of the building which comprises a two-storey unit with an independent entrance and staircase. The building is constructed of dressed stone and is preserved to blend with surrounding historic monuments. For the infill work concrete cement was used. Floors are primarily made of dressed stone, although some have been superimposed with imported ceramic tiles. Ceilings contain imported or local wooden beams.
