Zeinhom Slum Area Rehabilitation
Cairo, Egypt
The project involves the removal of illegal shanty dwellings in the Zeinhom Gardens district of central Cairo and their replacement with affordable apartment buildings, which the former slum dwellers now occupy. 29 apartment buildings along with social, cultural, health and religious facilities have been built, in clusters enclosing semi-public open spaces and linked by a pedestrian spine. Building costs were kept at a minimum in order that the project be replicable elsewhere.
