Saudi British Bank Offices
Jiddah, Saudi Arabia
This main office of a major bank is located in the urban area of Jeddah, north of the historic city center. The clients wished to present a strong easily recognisable corporate image.

The five-storey building comprises banking facilities on three lower floors and offices on the two floors above. The main banking hail is an open space extending the height of three floors. Interior spaces are extensively clad in travertine, as are the façades. Car parking is accomodated in two sub-levels.

Control of the harsh climate was an important design determinant, and the use of glass was restricted. This, combined with the desire to reflect the architectural heritage of the Kingdom, led to the development of the solid walled building with small, slotted windows, inspired by the traditional forms of the Nedj, Asir, and Gassim regions.

The structural system is cast-in-place concrete frame with block infill, exposed waffle-slab floors, and a steel frame roof.
