Imaret Sultan Süleiman
Damascus, Syria
The Imaret of Sultan Suleiman, commissioned by this Ottoman Sultan, was built in 1552 by his prized architect Sinan. The stone building was used to distribute food to impoverished pilgrims that visited the nearby tomb of the saint al-Arabi. The imaret is structured around a main central chamber covered with two domes with the service, storage and preparation cells wrapping around it. Today the imaret is still in use as a local bakery.
