Dar Ben Jelloun
Tetouan, Morocco

Dar Ben Jelloun is a courtyard house next to the Great Mosque of Tetouan, built by the Fasi family in the 19th century. Metal beams used in the construction of the house allowed for the removal of the pillars of the courtyard. It is remarkable for the use of Tetouani style zellij tilework, carved inscriptions in plaster, painted wood, and wrought iron. A small marble fountain in the center of the courtyard is replenished by the traditional water network that provides water to fountains throughout the medina.

In 2013, after an extensive restoration, the house became and artists’ residence, exhibition hall, and headquarters for Trankat, a nonprofit society established to bring artists to the medina of Tetouan where they engage with the local community and local artisans.
