Swat Archaeological Museum
Saidu Sharif, Pakistan
Following an earthquake in 2005 and a Taliban attack in 2008, the museum building, dating from 1959, suffered significant structural damage; its collections were removed for safe-keeping and the building was occupied by the army. In 2011, the architects were commissioned to create a masterplan for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the museum. The new museum includes the retrofitting of the original building and seismic structural upgrades, and the construction of two new buildings on either side, linked to the old building by two courtyards. The architectural character recalls the archaeological patrimony of the region with its interpretations of Gandharan forms and those of local fortifications.
