Adjacent to the town of Tadmur, also known as Palmyra. Said to have been built by Solomon, but may be confused with Tamar in Palestine; developed at beginning of Christian Era; under Roman suzerainty 1st cen. CE; gained prominence 130-270 CE; devoted to sun worship; ruled by Zenobia 267-272; destroyed 273.

The triumphal archestower tombsTemple of Baal Shamin, and Temple of Bel have been reported destroyed in 2015.
