This essay examines the historiography of modern architecture in the Islamic world in light of recent critical scholarship in postcolonial studies and a more recent wave of research examining various forms of colonial modernity. It concludes with a discussion of the need to both incorporate the architecture of colonialism in the history of Islamic architecture and to account for its impact on that history.
