This essay considers the circumstances that constrain the field of Islamic architectural history, such as widespread limitations on research travel and fieldwork, which were significant even before the COVID-19 crisis, and structural challenges within the professional landscape of higher education. It posits a view towards the future of the field, which responds to these limitations, in order to ensure its robust continuation.
