The Great Mosque of Mascara was built in the late 18th century under Ottoman rule. During the French occupation, it underwent transformations to be aligned with the church square. After independence, the number of naves was extended from 7 to 11. It was renamed Jami' Mustafa Ibn Tuhami (or Ben Thami), the name of brother-in-law and companion of Emir Abd al-Qadir, the emblematic leader of the resistance to the French occupation.
