Sri Geylang Serai
Singapore, Singapore
This redevelopment project consisting of the demolition of existing structures and the construction of five 19-storey residential blocks, a five-/six-storey car park with a landscaped roof, and a two-storey wet market with food stands is located in the Geylang Serai Cultural District, one of the city’s oldest Malay areas. Consequently, architectural references are made to Malay-style ‘kampung’ settlements, particularly in the roof features and market gardens facing the busy street, and in the accents: traditional patterns and decoration in modern materials. The market is connected to the apartments through the landscaped parking structure’s rooftop garden, which uses similar accents, as do the courtyards of the connectors between the apartment buildings.
