Akfirat Municipal Building
Istanbul, Türkiye

This municipal complex on a hilltop in a rapidly developing area is oriented for the views and organised as two bands in which the north and south facades are extensively glazed, while the east and west, are windowless. Beyond the desire to take advantage of the panorama, the building literally aspires to visibility and transparency for government: even the office partitions are in glass. Given that the district lacks community facilities, the complex includes a sports centre, auditoria and assembly halls in addition to municipal offices. This reinforced concrete structure, clad with a beige stone-like tile, consists of a basement and two floors, and features a massive overhang on the front facade, which adds to its monolithic air.
