House in Abousir II
Giza, Egypt
Hot desert and cool green climates meet at Abusir village, where Tarek Labib built his home and office. The neo-vernacular building reflects this contrast in its materials: concrete, industrial brick and metal along with white limewash, translucent salt bricks and red desert-clay bricks. The ground-floor space for entertaining has a raised Coptic vault, and a chimney separates kitchen from dining room. The architecture studio is at mezzanine level, along with a shaded terrace and small guest bedroom. On the first floor are a central living room and two bedroom suites. A central open courtyard acts as a circulation hub. Reflective colours, a double-skin envelope and shading devices ensure thermal comfort.
