Xixi Wetlands Artist Village
Hangzhou, China
The project forms part of a government initiative to conserve agricultural wetland through its transformation into a green district with cultural buildings in the form of artist villages. The morphology of village fabrics in southern China focuses on linear houses’ perpendicular relationship with waterfronts. The project design concept refers to this and is conceived as a series of architectural viewing frames of mountains, water, sky and earth. A concrete frame system allows flexibility, allowing tilting, differing datum levels and viewing angles. Contrasting stone differentiates parts and articulates linear volume. The architectural reinterpretation serves to conserve the wetland.
