Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt
Cairo, Egypt

This state-of-the-art, 180-bed facility houses the associated functions (radiology, oncology, surgery, etc.) for the treatment of children with cancer. The architect’s design aims to subvert the normative look of a hospital building. There are a several of symbolic, architectural elements such as Egyptian sailboats- felucca- which are evoked in the sandstone exterior; a glass globe is prominently incorporated into the design, and the lobbies and public spaces are generous, incorporating light, color and public art. The cloverleaf pattern adopted for the core building allows for efficiency and flexibility in the layout of the care units.
