The Tote
Mumbai, India
This new structure for use as a bar, restaurant and banquet facilities on the grounds of a dilapidated racetrack is set within the building envelope of the old, colonial edifice and finds inspiration in the canopy created by mature rain trees throughout the site. The architects employ the vocabulary of trees, continuously branching into finer and finer boughs, branches and twigs, interpreted in steel, for the structural system. A variety of branching systems differentiate spaces and functions. The geometries of tree canopies continue across the false ceiling, and are also utilised in the faceted wood paneling of the bar. The rooms are, for the most part, enclosed in glass.
