Kazan Kremlin Restoration
Kazan, Russian Federation
The project is based on a government decree for the preservation and restoration of the Kazan Kremlin, the administrative, cultural and historic heart of Tatarstan. Financed with federal funds to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Kazan, the project masterplan emphasised the integrity of the historic architecture and cultural pluralism, and prioritised both the traditional social functions and modern functions of the Kremlin. About 80 percent of the works have been completed to date. Historically appropriate materials were used in the restoration of the Kremlin’s monuments and inappropriate interventions such as asphalt surfaces were removed in favour of stone paving.
