Taipei 101
Taipei, Taiwan
Tapei 101 is the new landmark of Taiwan, a symbol of Taiwan’s economic success, and a cultural and urban icon. Its design, by local architects, competes with western 'tall buildings' (symbolic themselves of economic success), whilst also representing elements of oriental culture. The building is divided into 8 floors each - symbolising prosperity in Chinese culture, a flower or bamboo and constant growth. Three major civil technical issues were addressed: wind, earthquake and soil conditions. These design criteria were set to the highest standard in history. It has been hailed as one of the 'seven wonders of engineering'.
