Tellaba Health Centre
Ouadane, Mauritania
Constructed to provide a clinic for a town without any such facility, the Health Centre draws from the local architectural tradition of this 12th century caravan trading city. All exterior walls are clad in local stone, taking advantage of traditional craftsmanship, and creating a building that blends in with the architecture, the landscape, and the colours and textures of the region. A similar sensitivity has been demonstrated in the vaulted roofs, intended to evoke the surrounding cliffs and landscape. Finally, the majority of the building has been constructed by local artisans, a matter of pride for the inhabitants.
