Komirshy Aul Mosque
Narynkol, Kazakhstan
The remote mountain village of Komirshy aul, with a population of 600, had no place of worship until a local donor provided the funds to construct this 100-seat mosque. Given the low budget and inaccessibility of the site, the architect, working for free, sought a solution that could be easily built from local brick, sand and clay. The result breaks with tradition, presenting the idea of a ‘White Ship’, intended to symbolise the brightness of faith and salvation. Providing also a madrasa where children can study, the mosque has dramatically enhanced the social and spiritual life of the village while signalling a new approach to mosque design.
