Oluya Cholpon Ata Mausoleum
Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan
This religious building marks the entrance to Cholpon-Ata, a free territory that is undergoing development as a cultural centre. It is situated on the shore of the Issyk-Kul lake and, at 21 metres in height, it acts as a beacon for the city. The design follows Islamic principles of symmetry, geometry and symbolism. The central cupola is supported on columns that extend to form minarets, each topped with a pointed dome. Constructed from local brick, it is faced in white marble and sits on a red granite plinth flanked by sculptures. In form and scale it is an imposing landmark on the coast.
