Four Seasons Resort
Baa Atoll, Maldives
The architect adopted an ecologically-friendly approach to adapting this uninhabited island into a resort. Existing vegetation was disturbed as little as possible: for example, the jetty and reception building were aligned with two rows of coconut trees from an old plantation, which now delineate an entrance path. ‘Land villas’ were set back from the beach to protect the shore. ‘Water villas’ were built on pre-cast stilts to reduce damage to the reef. The use of coral debris from the 2004 tsunami avoided the transportation of stone from afar. All timber used in the structures came from certified eco-friendly suppliers.
