Bab al-Qurtub Restoration
Zabid, Yemen
This project has seen the preservation and rebuilding of Zabid’s southern city gate, comprising barracks, the city wall and a nubah or tower. A careful methodology was applied: local craftsmen and trainees were hired for all aspects of the work and used traditional techniques and materials - local wood, earth, lime and brick. The project was carefully documented, again with the help of trainees, and the monument has a new role as the home for the Centre for Developing Communities. As a result, the project will help in the transfer of knowledge about traditional building methods to a new generation of builders and craftsmen.
