British Embassy
Sana'a, Yemen
This embassy was one of the first to be completed after security had been reviewed following the 9/11 attacks. It had to balance high security with an accessible appearance, which it has achieved in part through the use of traditional local skills and crafts. Internally it is defined by a linear circulation zone which, though separated by ballistic glass, provides visual continuity. The building’s concrete form is eroded at one corner to create a welcoming entrance and is punctured by windows, shaded by brise-soleil. These contribute to an environmental strategy that also includes solar collectors, grey water irrigation, thermal mass walls and a cooling underground labyrinth.
