After-School Community Centre Jigi Semé
Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
Since it opened in 2003, the Jigi Semè Centre has provided extra tuition for around 500 students, allowing them to complete secondary school. It consists of an internal court and two side wings hosting flexible facilities: study rooms, large drawing boards and a small library. The building's construction coincided with an armed conflict in neighbouring Ivory Coast, so no imported materials could be used. The walls are made of laterite blocks extracted from a local quarry. Here they were shaped by hand, but future projects will use a block-cutting machine which can produce around 2'000 blocks a day at a significantly reduced cost.
