Deakin University Central Precinct
Burwood, Australia
The Central Precinct creates a 'new urban, sheltered heart' for Deakin University's Burwood Campus. A central atrium binds an assembly of four buildings, each with a different function: general purpose teaching, multipurpose hall, lecture hall and IT facilities, hospitality centre. The design is informed by 'the displaced landscape created by the removal and filling of this former tip site'. Face brick tiles or snaps of varying colours and textures are layered into standard precast concrete wall panels suggesting the site's 'lost' contours. Face brickwork continues this graphic reference to geological layering, and sets up a link with the environmentally sensitive creek location.
