Al Lathiif Mosque
Bandung, Indonesia
This is not so much a restoration of a building, as a total remodelling. The height of the mosque has been raised - from 3.7 metres to 9 metres - to create a more serene ambience for the prayer hall and better air circulation, while the 'onion domes' on the towers have been replaced with pitched roofs, which are more in keeping with the local architectural idiom. The local community - including women - has been directly involved in raising funds for the renovation and in the decision-making process. Work is being carried out in phases, as funds become available.
