Külliye of Mohamed Ali Pasha Restoration
Kavála, Greece
The restoration of the 'külliye' in Kavala was guided by a respect for the integrity of the original structure, which was built between 1817 and 1821 as a religious school and community centre. In converting the abandoned complex into a hotel, there were no irreversible structural alterations. Traditional techniques and materials were used wherever possible. Roman mortar was prepared in situ; domes were covered in lead sheets, applied on top of a layer of mud; corroded ironwork was cleaned and preserved; new window and door frames replicated the original woodwork.
