Aided Self-Help Reconstruction Project
Dhamar, Yemen
A community development housing project. The rectangular core of each house is completed by its owners according to construction specifications. The owners were then free to build extensions vertically or horizontally using the same techniques. Refunding for each building phase - based on a monitoring system ensuring that the works were correctly executed - was handed out to the owners. The resulting structures integrate with the local architectural style and include the introduction of traditional decorative elements such as arched openings placed over doors and windows and made of patterned meshes of juss (gypsum) filled with glass.
