University of Petroleum and Minerals
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
The University of Petroleum and Minerals campus in Dhahran was created to provide modern campus facilities for students and faculty members. The academic buildings are grouped in the centre of the site, on top of a hill, alluding to an oasis. Student and faculty housing is to the north and south of the academic buildings. The basic building material used in the various buildings is reinforced concrete. In the first phase cast in-situ concrete was selected as both labour and material were localy available. For later phases, as labour became expensive, the project was built with systems that use labour more efficirntly, such as precast and post-tensioning. All concrete work is sand-blasted. Marble, precast terazzo, anodized aluminum frames, and glare-reducing glass are other major building materials used throughout the campus.
