Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad)
Ahmedabad, India
The organization of the complex, as well as its architecture, reflects the conceptual organization of learning, which is focused on three components: the school, the students, and the teachers. The school is designed around the idea of meetings so the library becomes the center of the total complex. A system of porches defines the dormitories in units. The curved verandahs and light wells are also working places, calibrated for smaller meetings; it is here that the structure of red bricks becomes pierced by openings revealing inner walls. It is through these deep, narrow openings - the effect of low arches reacting to the deft weight of masonry - that the architectural character of the place is achieved.
