Kampung Sri Ampang
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Kampung Sri Ampang occupies 144 acres of land. There are several deep ponds on the site which was formerly a tin mine. The population of the Kampung is a mix of Malays and Indians, with an average family size of 4-5. The settlement began in 1970 with one house; by 1974 there were 355 houses. The population by 1979 had grown to 2417, with a total of 700 houses. The houses are assembled into small compounds to provide sheltered play areas for children and semi-private spaces for family social functions.

In 1974, Sir Ampang became an organised community. The objectives of the community were to provide adequate housing and raise living standards, and to secure some form of land tenure for the residents, with the possibility of permanent ownership of homes and land. From 1974-1976 the Kampung's political organisation negoitiated successfully with the municiple government for a series of infrastructure improvements including: water pipes, a bridge, and electricity to all homes.
