|| The Museum With No Frontiers (MWNF) launched its virtual museum, Discover Islamic Art, on 9 December 2005.
Created under the Euromed Heritage program of the European Union, 42 museums from 14 countries have contributed to its creation. Contributing countries include Algeria, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and the UK.
The Discover Islamic Art Virtual Museum includes a Permanent Collection of 1,235 objects, monuments, and archaeological sites from the participating countries. Users can search the entries by country and by period/dynasty. Descriptions are presented in Arabic, French, and English, as well as in the local language of the contributing country.
In addition to the Permanent Collection, a searchable Database dedicated to the participating museums is available.
Visitors to the website will also find Virtual Exhibitions, which follow distinct thematic itineraries presenting Islamic art and architecture from the Umayyads to the Ottomans in various Mediterranean countries.
Visitors can register for free on the site, and registered users can create their own collection from among the museum's digital holdings.
